07-03-13 A day off in Stockholm and Lidingö : This morning (first picture) the sunrise was colorful in a clear sky. I had no appointments today and had purposefully completed all my short-term tasks the evening before. This was to be A DAY OFF which, for a retired person, may seem odd—but I have many self-assigned tasks that begin to oppress me if I don’t take the occasional break.

I had been dreaming about the sculpture and art museum, Millesgården, in Lidingö, an island kommun across a piece of water from the kommun of Stockholm, but still part of Stockholms Län (county).

On the way there I had to stop at the post office to mail three things: my 2006 US Federal Tax documents; a book for granddaughters Sonya and Sydney (“A Rumpus in the Garden, featuring Pettson and his cat Findus, translated from the Swedish); and, to sister Diane, two tapes of Thomas Moore on “Education of the Heart.”

Then I treated myself to a sushi lunch near Odenplan and afterward walked through a nearby park to continue my travels on the Tunnelbana to Ropsten, thence to Millesgården via a quaint train line that terminates on the Stockholm side of the water. As I went through the park I saw a few people relaxing in the sun under one of my favorite public statues (pictures #2).

As I left the train I walked uphill through a pretty neighborhood before entering the museum, where there were lot of Russian tourists.

You will see many images from this mostly outdoor museum, several of some subjects, at different vantage points, to accentuate the vastness of the museum and it setting overlooking the waterway below. The works are mostly by Carl Milles, quite famous in Sweden, the USA and elsewhere.

The last few pictures are of the lakeside near our (Eva’s and mine) apartment, showing the ice nearly fully melted and the water birds returning.

It was a great day off.

06-12-06 A Morning in Stockholm : Every December one of the big department stores in downtown Stockholm provides us with an imaginative Christmas display in several of the windows fronting the main shopping street, "hamngatan" (harbor street). The Store is "NK" (pronounced very like en-koh'), an abbreviation of Nordiska Kompaniet, or "Nordic (Northern) Company." Since moving to Stockholm in 2002, I have recorded these displays, and I offer 2006's here, but with a number of other pictures leading up to the main course. The American Women's Club hosted a luncheon for its members on 6 December, with a two-hour show for the general public of the wares of local artists for sale. I showed up at 10.30 looking for something to give Eva for Christmas, and I found it. The affair was held at a hotel on the island of Djurgården ("animal farm") where, in the old days, the king had his private hunting preserve. Now it is a public park with many museums, hotels, restaurants, indoor and outdoor performance facilities and amusement parks, including "Gröna Lund" ("green grove") of which I show a few pictures here. Upon leaving the hotel to wend my way back to downtown and NK, I missed the bus and decided to take the ferry from Gröna Lund to another island, "Gamla Stan" ("Old Town") which is close to downtown. From the ferry boat i took several pictures of the harbor which is officially in the "Eastern Sea" (Baltic) but very close to the large lake Mälaren in which much of Stockholm City and Stockholm County reside. I show the area where the two bodies of water meet, and locks are built between them to accomodate commercial and private boat traffic. All told, Stockholm City contains 11 islands, in addition to its footprint on the mainland. Finally I show the Christmas display at NK. Please look for comments under some of the pictures.
